With the news that there will be more operations for fracking in the United States and even in Great Britain now, more and more people are starting to question the pros of the process to see whether it really is worth it or not, and to determine whether there is any danger to the environment because of it.
While there is still quite a bit of drilling happening in places such as the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea, there is a move toward what they are calling “inshore drilling”, namely fracking. It is proving to be quite successful, as well, and given the higher costs of oil and the lower costs of natural gas, it certainly makes sense from a financial perspective. The U. S. Energy Information Administration says the supply of natural gas is very abundant.
This can offer some substantial benefits to the country. Namely, it will mean that in addition to saving on the costs, it will also be possible to limit the dependence on oil from foreign sources. The independence is one of the reasons the U.K. is opening up to the idea of fracking as well. They see the success in the U.S. and they want to enjoy that freedom, as well.
Another one of the reasons that extracting the gas is cheaper is because of a newer, and many feel much better, method. Horizontal fracking, this new technique, is easier to employ, not to mention cheaper. Naturally, this will lead to more jobs in the areas where the fracking will take place as well. One of the areas of the country that is starting to see more activity in this area is Michigan, a state that can certainly use more jobs.
Fracking and using the natural gas obtained from it has some other benefits, as well. Environmentalists do not like the emissions from coal and oil, which has the potential to be bad for the environment. The emissions from natural gas are about half that of the emissions from those other substances, making it an environmentally friendly option for people to use.
