While no one likes to think about the gas and oil spills and explosions that have happened down through the years, it is very important to acknowledge that these things did happen. For every problem that the industry has faced, it has been able to come back stronger by improving on safety. A great recent example was the unfortunate BP Deepwater explosion from five years ago. This caused companies to take another look at the rigs they had in the Gulf of Mexico and to find ways to improve their safety.
The gas and oil industry is like any other out there. They learn from their mistakes and they improve. The president of the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association recently said in an interview with USA Today, “We we first drilled in shallow water, we learned from that. Went deeper and deeper, and got the unbelievable, tragic experience with Deepwater Horizon. But we’ve learned from that.”
The federal government has also played a role in this. They find that by following the new guidelines, they are creating safer work environments. They are also training their employees on the rig even better, and ensuring they have courses of action they can take if they see something is going wrong. Improving safety is a big concern of the industry, and it always has been. Unfortunately, the large accidents are the ones that get the most attention, and they can sometimes paint these companies in a bad light.
The truth of the matter though is that the oil companies have been working hard to make sweeping changes when it comes to improving their safety record. They do not want to suffer these accidents any more than others do. Everyone in the industry has a particular role they play when it comes to safety and improving it. From the companies that create the machinery and equipment in use on the rigs and in the field to the workers who are on the rig, it is important for everyone to take safety seriously.
Many of the large companies have been very proactive when it comes to implementing more safety measures, and they’ve been very transparent about this. This transparency has helped some of the smaller gas and oil companies that are still trying to find their footing in the business. They are taking their cues from the larger companies and they are already making massive improvements to their safety. While it might not be possible to eliminate disasters entirely, the industry is working hard to curb them.
